Although its role in the atherosclerosis process is known, cholesterol is also involved in much other pathology, like Alzheimer’s, Huntington, infertility and certain forms of autism.

So it’s important to know its mechanisms to handle the conditions under which it is involved.

To determine alterations of cholesterol metabolism is important in understanding many diseases in which is involved not only atherosclerosis. Miguel Lasuncion, head of Research Department of Biochemistry, Hospital Ramon y Cajal, Madrid has coordinated the International Symposium Cholesterol metabolism, actions and changes that took place in the Ramon Areces Foundation of Medical Journal Madrid.h explained that the objective of the meeting was to review the basics of biology of this molecule.

“Although it is well established the relationship between cholesterol and atherosclerosis has been reviewed in the context of the disease and to understand aspects of cardiovascular disease.

The brain has a very active cholesterol metabolism and is required for the formation of myelin. Therefore, their changes affect their function, so it has been linked to neurodegenerative disorders, like Alzheimer’s and Huntington.

However, “we are still in early stages of research and begin to relate to some aspects, but it is too early to think about therapeutic options, among other things because these are diseases in which multiple genes are involved, making them difficult to handle.

For now, the lowering used in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders have no role in these other injuries, “as cholesterol metabolism in the brain is different from vascular. Synthesized in the very fabric of the cholesterol it needs and just reflected in blood. ”

There are also controversial data, especially in the potential benefits of those taking statins and the prevention of Alzheimer’s, a situation that is absent in all subjects.

It is still difficult to handle Alzheimer’s patients in which cholesterol is altered. There are chemicals that can cross the brain barrier and inhibit the cholesterol synthesis, but in many cases is not what we want. “It is contrary to what happens in the rest of the organism, what is sought is not inhibit cholesterol synthesis, since it is necessary and essential for cognitive functions.

Fertility

The involvement of cholesterol is also present in fertility problems, eg in gametogenesis. “There are cases of altered proteins that influence cholesterol fertility, but it is difficult to know how we can influence. We are still far from controlling these diseases by addressing the changes in cholesterol.

We also saw that is involved in psychiatric disorders and some forms of autism. “Not all cases of autism are related, but some children born with severe malformations have symptoms of autism and some improve when given cholesterol.”

According to researchers at the German laboratory Beiersdorg AG, a series of experiments showed that consumption of a tea made from the plant Camellia sinensis inhibits the generation of new fat cells.
White tea, as it is called the preparation with the first shoots of plants which are green tea and black-lowering effects of obesity, according to a study released today by the journal Nutrition and Metabolism.

According to researchers at the German laboratory Beiersdorg AG, a series of experiments showed that consumption of a tea made from the plant Camellia sinensis inhibits the generation of new fat cells (adipocytes) and stimulates the elimination of that fat in mature cells.

“We have shown that white tea may be an ideal source of natural substances to lose weight,” said Marc Winnefeld, member of research team.

According to the scientist, white tea may be at least a partial solution to the obesity problem that affects mainly the U.S., where it is considered that about 60 percent of the population is overweight.

“In industrialized countries, the increasing incidence of obesity-related disorders, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes are growing problems,” he said.

The scientist explained that the infusion induced a reduction of the activity of genes related to development of new fat cells while giving a boost to dissolve the fat in the adipocytes.

White tea is less processed and contains more of the ingredients that are believed to be responsible for the effects in the study demonstrated that green or black, according to scientists.

Researchers at the School of Public Health at Harvard, in Cambridge, coordinated by Dimitrios Trichopoulos, have shown that consumption of wine.

Researchers at the School of Public Health at Harvard, Boston, coordinated by Dimitrios Trichopoulos, have shown that wine consumption in moderation, eating small amounts of beef and plenty of vegetables, fruits and nuts, and the olive oil appear to contribute to increased longevity.

The study is published online in BMJ.Los scientists who analyzed l0s potential benefits arising from the Mediterranean diet, have examined data from 23,000 healthy individuals (men and women between 20 and 86 years) in Greece who had participated in test European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition.

Although this study did not evaluate the causes of death, previous studies in this cohort had shown that the Mediterranean diet has a beneficial effect on cardiac mortality.

After a median follow up of eight years and a half the team Trichopoulos noted that the mortality rate was higher in participants who followed the Mediterranean diet less.

Several employers

The accompanying editorial, whose author is Teresa T. Fung, School of Public Health at Harvard, in Boston, said that to promote longevity must follow various patterns of Mediterranean diet, as the effect of one alone is not enough.

Experts Biomedical Research Center in Red-Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) have shown that blood donation leads to an improvement in insulin resistance.

Experts Biomedical Research Center in Red-Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) through Section of Endocrinology, Hospital Josep Trueta de Girona, directed by Dr. Jose Manuel Fernandez-Real, have shown that blood donation drive to an improvement in insulin resistance and, consequently, could prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes, the most common among obese people and linked to a sedentary life style.

The center, under the Ministry of Science and Innovation, said today in a statement that the blood samples in a controlled manner can balance the levels of iron absorbed by the organism and thus prevent oxidation of tissues.

CIBERobn The study, led by Dr. Felipe Casanueva, was the conduct of clinical trials performed to thirty male patients with a mean age of 50 years with type 2 diabetes. Half followed its standard program of diet, exercise and medication, while the other half underwent the same treatment and was advised to donate blood three times (once every 15 days) during a period of six weeks.

According to Fernandez-Real said the results showed that “patients who donated blood showed a significant improvement in metabolic control of insulin resistance and vascular function to maintain the same medication.

Regarding the amount of iron recommended, the expert explained that “what matters is the balance away from the extremes, neither too much nor too little iron. Only women in fertile period, with regular loss of iron supplements if needed is iron-deficiency anemia, the most common anemia, caused by the deficiency of this mineral – “he said.

In this regard, adding that “when speaking of foods rich in iron, must take into account not only the iron content of these nutrients, but the amount of this mineral that our body is able to harness” and explained that the food, iron occurs in two forms. First, heme iron found in animal foods like organ meats, meats, seafood and, secondly, the non-heme iron, only absorbed by our body and therefore more desirable, which is in the plant foods such as legumes, nuts, green vegetables or cereals.

Thus, Fernandez-Real recommend the Mediterranean diet, enough for a minimum contribution of iron in absentia, and lacking such meat and is rich in fish and vegetables, which reduce the absorption of iron. “It is advisable to drastically reduce the consumption of red meat, rich in heme iron,” he said.
