6 Tips to Preventing Motion Sickness in the Air

If you’re one of the unlucky people who has to deal with motion sickness every time you climb on board an airplane, check out the following tips to help prevent becoming ill:

1. Be smart about what you eat and drink prior to and during the flight. Stay away from alcohol and foods that simply don’t agree with your stomach such as spicy or fat-rich foods. Instead, opt for lots of water and a light salad or chicken sandwich.

2. Take some meds. Over-the-counter motion sickness drugs certainly do some in handy. Be sure to stock up before you travel so that you’ll be prepared if motion sickness comes on.

3. Spend the extra bucks on a good seat. While cheap tickets are appealing, they can lead you to have the worst seats on the plane—towards the back. Sitting in the rear of an airplane will cause you to be much more susceptible to motion sickness. Spend the extra money and get a better seat.

4. Put the book down. If you’re prone to becoming ill while flying, don’t read. Reading tends to cause motion sickness. Instead of reading, watch an in-flight movie or take a snooze.

5. Pump up the air. If you’re beginning to feel nauseous, open the vents and allow some cool air to blow on your face. This can help to soothe you and, hopefully, make the nauseous feeling pass.

6. Carry alcohol swabs. Believe it or not, the scent of alcohol actually soothes nausea. Carry a few alcohol swabs in your bag or pocket and crack one open if you begin to feel sick to your stomach. Breathe normally with the swab held up to your nose and enjoy the relief.

These are just six tips that can help you to prevent and/or relieve motion sickness while in the air. What other pieces of advice would you like to share with fellow motion-sickness-prone travelers?

3 Easy Ways to Avoid Asthma Attacks

If you have asthma, you probably carry a bronchodilator, or “rescue” inhaler. These can stop an asthma attack, but it’s better to prevent attacks in the first place. Think of your rescue inhaler the way you think of your car insurance: it’s great to know it’s there, but you want to avoid having to make a claim. Remember these three easy ways to prevent asthma attacks, and you’ll remain healthier.

1. Use prescribed maintenance medications exactly as directed by your doctor. These can prevent or reduce the number of attacks you experience and decrease your reliance on your rescue inhaler.

2. Avoid upper respiratory infections. Stay away from people who are sick, wash hands frequently, and keep your mouth and neck covered when you’re outside in cold weather. If your spouse or partner has a respiratory infection, consider sleeping separately until it passes.

3. Dust and vacuum frequently. Sure, it’s no fun, but dust and dust mites are very common asthma triggers, and keeping their levels under control can do wonders for cutting down on asthma attacks. Be sure to pay attention to blinds, curtains, and shelves. If your home has lots of dust, wear a dust mask when taking care of these tasks to avoid breathing dust kicked up by cleaning.

The sooner you realize an attack is underway, the quicker you can act to keep it from becoming dangerous. Should you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek emergency care:

  • Very rapid or difficult breathing
  • Continuous coughing, to the point where talking is impossible
  • Wheezing while both inhaling and exhaling
  • Paleness or blue lips or fingernails
  • Extreme shortness of breath

Asthma is a serious disease, and anyone with it should work hard at prevention while having a plan for coping when serious symptoms occur.
