Exposure to sunlight reduces the risk of blood clots
Exposure to sunlight reduces the risk of thrombosis according to a Swedish study published in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Women who are tanning in the sun have a 30% lower risk of blood clots.
Pelle Lindqvist Karolinska University Hospital and colleagues from Lund University analyzed data from a study of 40,000 Swedish women since 1990. Even taking into account in the analysis of other factors such as exercise or smoking, sunbathing reduced the risk of blood clots.
The risk of thrombosis is higher in December, January and February in Sweden, where the less sun, says Professor Lindqvist. Bronzer would avoid the deficiency of vitamin D during winter. The exact role played by vitamin D in the prevention of thrombosis is not yet established.
These results should be similar for men, say researchers.
Professor Lindqvist recommended sun exposure for brief periods each day and avoiding sunburn to reduce the risk of cancer.
