Experts Biomedical Research Center in Red-Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) through Section of Endocrinology, Hospital Josep Trueta de Girona, directed by Dr. Jose Manuel Fernandez-Real, have shown that blood donation drive to an improvement in insulin resistance and, consequently, could prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes, the most common among obese people and linked to a sedentary life style.

The center, under the Ministry of Science and Innovation, said today in a statement that the blood samples in a controlled manner can balance the levels of iron absorbed by the organism and thus prevent oxidation of tissues.

CIBERobn The study, led by Dr. Felipe Casanueva, was the conduct of clinical trials performed to thirty male patients with a mean age of 50 years with type 2 diabetes. Half followed its standard program of diet, exercise and medication, while the other half underwent the same treatment and was advised to donate blood three times (once every 15 days) during a period of six weeks.

According to Fernandez-Real said the results showed that “patients who donated blood showed a significant improvement in metabolic control of insulin resistance and vascular function to maintain the same medication.

Regarding the amount of iron recommended, the expert explained that “what matters is the balance away from the extremes, neither too much nor too little iron. Only women in fertile period, with regular loss of iron supplements if needed is iron-deficiency anemia, the most common anemia, caused by the deficiency of this mineral – “he said.

In this regard, adding that “when speaking of foods rich in iron, must take into account not only the iron content of these nutrients, but the amount of this mineral that our body is able to harness” and explained that the food, iron occurs in two forms. First, heme iron found in animal foods like organ meats, meats, seafood and, secondly, the non-heme iron, only absorbed by our body and therefore more desirable, which is in the plant foods such as legumes, nuts, green vegetables or cereals.

Thus, Fernandez-Real recommend the Mediterranean diet, enough for a minimum contribution of iron in absentia, and lacking such meat and is rich in fish and vegetables, which reduce the absorption of iron. “It is advisable to drastically reduce the consumption of red meat, rich in heme iron,” he said.
